Marcel Granollers missed a chance yesterday and he knew it. The 22-year-old had to qualify for this event, but was within touching distance of round three before things just slipped away.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was 3-5 down in the final set with Granollers serving for the match, but the Frenchman has fighting spirit to go with the raw power and came back to take it 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(5). Tsonga felt afterwards that his recent tennis, especially in Bangkok, was similar to at the start of the year when he made the Australian Open final.
Granollers was visibly dejected afterwards. “I had the match in my hands and I couldn’t close it out,” he said.
David Nalbandian progressed as a 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 winner over Tomas Berdych and it would have been straight sets if the Argentine hadn’t lost concentration at the start of set two. Nalbandian’s fluent ball-striking and ability to work the angles especially off his backhand proved too strong for Berdych. Nalbandian was relatively satisfied afterwards. “At the beginning of the second set, I lost control of the ball and my timing was off but after that, I played at a great level,” he explained.
Juan Martin Del Potro didn’t need to complete his match as Jarkko Nieminen retired traling 6-2, 4-2.
